I just saw Captain Phillips staring Tom Hanks and directed by Paul Greengrass and I have to say I liked it. I thought it was great movie, long, but great. So if you can sit through a 2 hr and 14 min movie go see it.
From time to time I enjoy a great soundtrack and something just so happen to catch my ear towards the end of Captain Phillips. It was the score. I kept saying to myself this melody sounds just like Inception. I broke out my Inception soundtrack on my iPod on the way home and it was Time, the last track for Inception.
I looked up the track I heard in the theater and it is Safe Now. Which just so happens to be the last track for Captain Phillips. Coincidence? I dug a little deeper and decided to listen to the entire soundtrack some of it sounding similar to Hans Zimmer. For those who don't know, Zimmer is the man behind The Dark Knight, Inception, The Da Vinci Code and countless other great soundtracks.
The man behind Captain Phillips is not Zimmer but it is Henry Jackman. A graduate from Eton and Oxford college with, " An avid interest in technology and contemporary culture. " Jackman actually worked along side Zimmer which makes sense to why you hear similarities. So was that last track Safe Now paying homage to Zimmer and his track Time? In my opinion maybe he was, but I don't know for sure. You be the judge take a listen to the tracks below.

CONGRATULATIONS! I noticed the same and I searched about it in google. I found the relationship between Henry Jackman, John Powell and Hans Zimmer. And then, I found your article. Good post!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I also noticed the incredibly high similarity right after I watched the "Captain Phillips". I even thought that those two tracks were both done by Zimmer before I check the maker of "Safe Now". Your article really gave a good answer!
ReplyDeletecame to this page because i made the same. felt the last track is similar to the one in inception. i wrote in google "captain phillips vs inception music" and came to your page. ;)
ReplyDeleteand one thing to notice at the end credits, just after where they show the albums and songs used in the film it says HANS ZIMMER...
ReplyDeleteSame thought. The tracks leading to the end had the feel and motifs from The Dark Knight. Safe Now is either a blatant rip off from Time or paying mad homage to it, even some of the guitar thrown end at the end of Safe Now is similar to Time.
